Indica, Sativa, or Hybrid: What is the real difference?
The classic split every cannabis shopper learns, and where the science gets more interesting.
The classic shorthand
Indica, sativa, and hybrid are the first three words most cannabis shoppers learn. Indicas are associated with full-body relaxation and nighttime use. Sativas with energetic, cerebral, daytime effects. Hybrids sit somewhere in between, leaning one way or the other depending on their parent strains.
Where the shorthand breaks down
The truth is more nuanced. A plant's physical shape, tall and narrow versus short and bushy, is what botanists call indica and sativa. But the experience is driven by the chemical profile, the cannabinoids and terpenes, not the shape of the plant. That is why you will occasionally meet a sativa that puts you to sleep or an indica that sparks creativity. The label is a starting point, not a guarantee.
